Survival Tips for Kids Aged 5-11

1You should always notify your parents/caretakers in detail of your whereabouts

2 Ask permission from your parents or caretaker before you go out with someone, go to their house, and notify them about the time you will be back.

Let your parents know of any changes you make, in person or by phone.
3 When returning home after school, game, friends etc. Take the keys out of the backpack, open the door immediately,get inside, and lock the door. Do not stay on the doorstep and chat with your friends.

4 If the doorbell rings at home, do not open the door to a stranger, especially if you are alone, look through the peephole. If the person at the door persists, or you sense danger call 911 immediately
5 Never say you are home alone when answering the phone. (Instead say something like, "my mom is busy, or in the shower can I take a message?")
6 Never let someone from the cable company, phone company or another uniformed person into the house if an adult/parent is not present.
7 At home, lock all your doors and your windows. If you have an alarm system use it . Make sure your parents teach you how to activate,deactivate and work the system.This includes the panic button
8 Keep emergency numbers near the telephone
9 Keep objects in each room that might be used as a weapon (like a baseball bat or walking cane)

10 If someone claims to be a police officer or FBI, call 911 to make sure that they are telling the truth. Do not open the door
11 You should never accept any candy, money or presents from a stranger, no matter how much you want it
12 Never walk or play in isolated areas or inside or near empty buildings, or construction sites
13 If your intuition or gut feeling warns you of danger, or if you have the feeling that someone is watching or following you. Listen to it, trust it, and act on it. Leave the area at once and run to a safe place

14 In case of an emergency, call 911 and say " Help Me" if you cannot talk ,leave the phone off the hook or open so the police can trace your call and know how to locate you
15 If you are attacked, respond instantly by using the Survival techniques you learned to temporarily stop or disable the attacker and escape. Never stop fighting back and always keep looking for an escape route
16 Never go into a car or a van with a stranger. Only with your parents permission

18 Have an honest and open relationship with your parents. Share your fears, problems and stresses with them, wether its about sex, drugs, peer pressure, gangs, school, someone intimidating you, molesting you etc.
19 If you ever find yourself in a location or a situation where you
feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or threatened, contact your parents at once to come and pick you up, no matter how late or how far it is
20 Never hitchhike, or accept a ride from a stranger
21 Avoid taking shortcuts, or walking through empty o
vacant buildings, parks, or construction sites
22 Do not walk, through a high crime or unfamiliar area. Avoid sites where gangs hang out, and prostitution prevails
23 Always walk with a friend, never alone, stick together and walk at the pace of the youngest or slowest, never leave one kid behind
24 Write down the license plate of suspicious individuals, if there is nothing to write it with, then use your finger, and write it on dirt or snow
25 Trust your instincts-- If your intuition warns you of danger, or the feeling that you are being followed or watched. Listen to it, trust it, and act on it. Leave the area immediately, and find a safe place
26 If attacked, give your money or jewelry, throw it to them, and run away
27At night, always walk by well lit, open and public areas. Avoid isolated areas by yourself, such as a bus stop, the Metro, parking garages etc.
28 Never react to the lure of a stranger, no matter how appealing it may seem examples; the opportunity to make some quick money by helping him to load or unload some boxes, groceries etc. to his van or the trunk of his car, directions, help in finding his lost puppy ect.
Remember adults "never" need the help from kids for any reason
Survival Tips for Parents
29 Teach your children, and make sure that they understand that the bad guys look like very nice, clean normal people, just like their fathers, grandfathers, uncles and neighbors, because they are fathers, grandfathers and uncles and neighbors
30 Teach your children, that they must never speak to an adult they do not know. An adult will always outsmart, or beat a child, and win their trust
31 Raise your child to have a strong sense of self-respect and self-confidence, and empower your child to say "no" to an adult. If you teach your children, that is okay to say no to an adult, they will use it if a threatening situation arises. They will feel secure and in control because you gave them the power and choice to be tough and that is okay to say No!
32 Create an environment at home, where your kids feel free to talk and share with you their ideas, problems, and their concerns. Convey a strong message, that you support them and help them no matter what. That they should never "keep a secret" from you, no matter who asks them, wether it is another child, relative, or any other adult authority figure
33 Become involved in your children's lives, talk to them, meet their friends, and really listen to them
34 Talk to your children about difficult topics like violence, sex issues, drugs etc. Nothing should be taboo. Uneducated or uninformed children are the most vulnerable
35 Teach your children without making them paranoid, how to recognize dangerous signals or situations and lures the bad guys use like ( I lost my puppy, can you help me find it? or would you help me with directions? or would you like to make a quick buck? candy, toys etc.)
36 Role-play certain abduction scenarios with your kids, teach them what to do, and practice constantly till they grasp the concept of stranger- danger
37 Know all your kids friends and their parents, and all their teachers
38 Never leave children under 5 years old unattended
39 Avoid any items such as clothing, toys, tags, lunch boxes, luggage,etc. with your child’s name on it. Avoid using bumper stickers advertising your kids school, sports etc.
40 Before hiring potential housekeepers, babysitters, or any child care personal, make sure to check their references thoroughly
41 Make sure your child has all the important telephone numbers and emergency numbers and post them in readily accesible places throughout the house
42 Make sure your children know their names, last names, address, telephone numbers (home, and a cellular, where they can reach you at all times)
43 Make sure your child knows how to dial 911!
44 Teach your children safe places where to hide in the house
45 Teach your child escape routes out of your house and places to run
46 Point out safe houses, temples, churches, in your neighborhood that your child can go to if frightened or chased
47 Never leave a child alone in a public place
48 Always accompany your child into public restrooms
49 Always go with your child to supervise door-to-door activities such as fundraising or Halloween
50 Teach your child that police are their friends
51 Keep up-to-date medical and dental records of your child
52 Have your child fingerprinted, and always keep recent close up picture of your child
53 Find out where convicted sex offenders live in your community
54 Make it a family rule that your children must let you know where and with whom they are at all times
55 To prepare for emergencies, parents and children should decide on a password, and review it weekly. Choose a password that is not easily figure out

Survival Escape Techniques
58 If taken by a stranger, teach child to yell specific phrases such as, "Help, I have been
abducted, I do not know this person!" "I need your help, I’m being kidnapped!"
59 If grabbed inside a public place like a mall, teach child to drop weight down, twist,
stretch out, kick their legs and scream "Help! I need your help, I’m being kidnapped!"
60 If child is grabbed inside a store, teach your child to yell, and grab onto the nearest person, call attention by breaking merchandise, knocking down displays, and screaming to the top of their little lungs
61 If a car pulls next to your child, and the driver stops them and tries to ask for directions, teach your child never to get close, or lean up against the car. Tell your child to run away in the opposite direction that the car is going, and scream.
62 If your child is attacked and held by force in a parking lot, teach your child to run, pound on cars to set off car alarms, and to go under a parked car if it is possible.
63 If your child is locked in the trunk of a car, teach the child to push out the taillights, let the wires dangle out, and stick an arm out to call the attention of other drivers, and throw items inside the trunk out.
64 If your child is kidnapped, and forced into a car, teach your child to jump into the backseat and go out from the back door.
65 Teach your child how to disable a car by putting a small object inside the ignition switch or pull out the wires under the dashboard.
66 If your child is abducted, and locked in a house, an apartment, barn etc. teach your child to always try all the doors and the windows as an escape route, and to create situations that will cause attention, and an emergency; such as ( break windows, and throw items out, set off alarms, flood the bathroom).
